Banded Dotterel (charadrius bicinctus)

Size: 20cm, 60gm
Description: Mid-sized dotterel with confusing range of plumages depending on sex and season. Breeding adults have a thin black band on neck and a thick chestnut band on the chest. Non-breeding adults and juveniles have much faint markings. Males are much more brightly coloured than female.
Habitat: Flocks are found at estuaries, lake edges and sometimes short grass.
Status: Widespread protected endemic, approx 50,000.
Breeding: July-January. 2-4 eggs laid. Males prepare nests, both sexes incubate.
Distinguishing Features: Easily distinguished in breeding plumage with black neck band and chestnut chest.
