Black Backed Gull (larus dominicanus)

Size: 60cm, 1050/850gm (male/female)
Discription: Adult head, neck, under parts rump and tail white, back and upper wings black with narrow white trailing edge. Bill is yellow with a red spot at tip of lower bill. Greenish yellow legs. Juvenile is mottled dull brown reaching adult appearance at approx. 4th year.
Habitat: Ranges widely, feeds on farmland, ploughed fields, beaches, harbours and rubbish tips, but seldom ventures far out to sea.
Status: Unprotected native - widespread and common.
Breeding: October - February. Breeds in large colonies on the coast, offshore islands and also far inland on river beds, near lakes and tarns.
Distinguishing Features: Largest gull in New Zealand.
