Black-Billed Gull (larus bulleri)

Size: 37 cm, 300/250gm (male/female)
Description: Lightly coloured gull with long, thin, black bill with bright red interior. Reddish black feet and white eye. Small amount of black on wingtips. Juvenile has flesh coloured bill with dark tip and brown eye.
Habitat: South island lakes, waterways, wet paddocks, beaches and estuaries.
Status: Protected endemic, approx. 50,000 pairs in 1996.
Breeding: September - february. 1-4 olive green eggs laid. Both sexes build the nest and incubate. Family becomes nomadic after last egg has hatched.
Distinguishing Features: Only gull in New Zealand with black bill and dark legs.
