New Zealand Dabchick (Poliocephalus rufopectus)

Size: 29 cm, 250 gm.
Description: A small dark grebe with small head, short bill and fluffy tail. It has a yellow eye and chestnut neck and breast. Fine silver feathers streak its head. Non-breeding birds are paler and lack silver streaks.
Habitat: Sheltered parts of lakes, farm ponds and oxidation ponds in the north island. Feeds on aquatic insects and their larvae.
Status: Protected threatened endemic. 1700-1800 birds. Extinct in the South Island.
Breeding: June - March. 2-3 eggs. Anchored floating nest. Both sexes incubate.
Distinguishing Features: Yellow eye, fine silver streaks on its head.
