New Zealand Falcon (falco novaeseelandiae)

Size: 43 cm, 300/500 gm (male/female)
Description: Bird of prey with rapid wing beats and pointed wings. Dark eye, wings and beak. Cere and legs yellow. Underparts dark to speckled. Juveniles darker with less distinct markings.
Habitat: Forests and bush areas including open tussockland in the South Island. Feed on live prey, no carrion.
Status: Protected threatened endemic. In the 1970's there were 4000 pairs.
Breeding: Sep - Feb. 2-4 eggs. Female broods chicks while male collects food.
Distinguishing Features: Raptor with fast wingbeats. Yellow cere and feet.
