New Zealand Scaup (aythya novaeseelandiae)

Size: 40 cm, 650 gm
Description: Small dark diving duck. Male is a glossy black with brown underparts. Bill is grey-blue with black tip, eye yellow. Female blackish brown with vertical white stripes at base of bill, eye brown. Juveniles have female markings but have darker bills and lack white stripes.
Habitat: Freshwater lakes. Feeds on bottom weed and invertebrates by diving.
Status: Protected endemic. 20,000 birds in the 1990's.
Breeding: Oct - Mar. 2-15 eggs. Only female incubates. Nest is a grass bowl lined with down.
Distinguishing Features: Male has yellow eye, female has brown eye with vertical white strips at the base of the bill.
