Variable Oystercatcher (haematopus unicolor)

Size: 48cm, 725gm.
Description: Plumage varies from complete black to pied. Pink legs with bright red bill and eye. Larger than pied oystercatcher. Sexes alike. Juvenile browner with dark red bill and dull legs.
Habitat: Wetlands, estuaries and coastlines. Breeds on both rocky and sandy coastlines.
Status: Protected rare endemic, approx 4000 birds distributed throughout New Zealand.
Breeding: September - February. 1-5 eggs. Both sexes incubate, female during the day, male at night.
Distinguishing Features: Pied phase distinguished from pied oystercatcher by larger size and smudgy boarder on chest.
