White Fronted Tern (sterna striata)

Size: 40cm, 160g
Description: Light coloured tern with long dark bill and dark legs. Black skull-cap separated from bill by white band. In non-breeding adult the skull-cap receeds to above the eyes. Juvenile heavily mottled on upperparts.
Habitat: Coastal waters and harbours. Seldom seen away from the coastline. Large flocks form over schools of fish. Roost on sandspits and banks.
Status: Protected native. 15,000 - 20,000 in 1997.
Breeding: October - February. 1-2 eggs. Breeds in large colonies on sandy beaches or smaller colonies on cliff ledges.
Distinguishing Features: Black bill and skull-cap. Hawking hunting technique.
