Size: 53cm, 1000/700gm (male/female)
Description: Flightless. Four subspecies vary in colour tone - all have brownish colouring with black steaks. Short bill and legs. Walks and forages with jerky movements. Can run very fast if necessary.
Habitat: Scrub, forest, bush - anywhere with plenty of cover.
Status: Protected threatened endemic. Breeding programs are attempting to reintroduce northern Weka.
Breeding: August - February. 1-6 eggs laid in a bowl nest in a short burrow or in a dry well hidden area.
Distinguishing Features: Distinctive brown flightless bird with sturdy bill and legs. Inquisitive, likes shiny objects - hazzard to trampers.
