White-Faced Heron (ardea novaehollandiae)
Size: 67cm, 550gm
Description: Slender, blue/grey heron with white face, black bill and green/yellow legs. Adult breeding plumage has distinctly visible plumes on neck and back with lighter pink/peach colouring on lower neck.
Habitat: Coastal esturies, lagoons, rivers, lakes and farmland - especially in lowland areas with estuaries or lakes nearby.
Status: Protected self-introduced native. Widespread and common.
Breeding: June - February. 3-5 eggs incubated by both sexes. Nests built in high treetops especially eucalypts and pines.
Distinguishing Features: Only blue/grey heron in New Zealand with a white face.
