Yellowhammer (emberiza citrinella)
Size: 16cm, 27g
Description: Sparrow sized bird, mainly yellow, upperparts red/brown, head has brown markings on sides and crown. Male has crimson wash on breast. Females have more defined head markings.
Habitat: Ranges from coastal habitat to sub-alpine areas. In open areas and scrub land. Commonly seen flushed from the side of the road when driving.
Status: Common European introduction.
Breeding: October-March. 3-5 eggs laid in a nest made from dry grass. The nest is very close to the ground, in a dense clump of vegetation on ungrazed ground.
Where to photograph: Although widespread and common, yellowhammers are very shy. Approach slowly and hope or use a hide.
