  • Moeraki Boulders Moeraki Boulders Moeraki Boulders

I had never photographed the Moeraki boulders before, although we had driven past them numerous times (mostly after dark). On this occasion, there was a tremendous storm approaching. The bank of cloud was illuminated by the setting sun and there were regular flashes of lightning (I was annoyed not to get a single one in a photograph). I somehow doubt I will see that sort of lighting repeated for a long time.
    Details: Canon 350d, EF-S 17-85mm IS, 1/160, f/9.0, 400 ISO, hand held.

Moeraki Boulders

Less than one hour north of Dunedin, these great spherical boulders consist of mud, fine silt and clay, all cemented by calcite. The erosion of the softer surrounding mudstone continues to gradually expose new boulders which are as much as two meters in diameter.
