  • Chukor Chukor Chukor

This Chukor was photographed near the top of Mt. John.

After a long search we finally found two chukor (their call really gives them away - chuck-er-chuck-er-chuckar-chuckar). They were very timid and I carefully lined up my approach with a large rock so it couldn't see me until I was in position. I only got a couple of shots - as soon as they saw my lens peek out from behind the rock, they were off!

Solid cleanblack necklace from above bill crossing eye down to low on the throat. Inside necklace creamy. Short wings used for moderate flights. Call: chuck-er-chuck-er-chuckar-chuckar.

Status: Locally common Asian introduction. Unknown population but numbers presumed reasonably high.

Where and how to photograph: Mt John near Lake Tekapo is a good spot. Chukor are very timid and can fly well, so good stalking is required.
