    This Silvereye was photographed at Lake Tekapo two days after heavy snowfall. All the birds in the area were gathered around a small apple tree which still had fruit.

    This photograph was taken at a sugar-water feeder in winter. I used a simple white bed sheet to cover myself and equipment, the silvereyes returned within minutes, many used the lens as a perch and a few landed on my head before going to the feeder.
    Details: Canon 400d, Sigma 180mm f/3.5 Macro, 1/125, f/4, 200 ISO, 420ex fill-flash, tripod, hide.

Silvereye (zoxterops lateralis)
Tauhou

Size: 12 cm, 13 gm

Description: Small green/brown bird with white ring around eye. Head and upperparts olive green, back grey. Underparts creamy white merging to pinkish brown. Sexes alike, juveniles have no white eye ring.

Habitat: Forests, scrub, private gardens, bushland. Almost all vegitated lowlying areas.

Status: Partially protected native. Widespread and locally abundant.

Breeding: September - March. 2-5 eggs, Incubated by both sexes in cup-like nest made from fine fibrous material.

Distinguishing Features: Only white-eye in New Zealand.
