    This Juvenile Spotted Shag was photographed in morning light on the cliffs near the Albatross colony on the Otago Peninsula.

Spotted Shag (stictocarbo punctatus)

Size: 70 cm, 1200 gm

Description: Grey shag with black spots yellow feet and fine brown bill. Breeding adult has green facial skin, double crest, broad white striped on side of neck, grey breast and black thighs. Non-breeding adult has yellow facial skin, pale underparts and thin white neck stripe. Juvenile is browner with indistinct markings.

Habitat: Coastlines, estuaries and harbours.

Status: Protected endemic. Widespread and locally common. 10,000 to 50,000 birds.

Breeding: All year (but dependant on location). 1-4 eggs. Nests made from seaweed and grass.

Distinguishing Features: Black spots on back and wings, green or yellow facial skin.
