  • Tui Tui Tui

    This photo shows many of the tui's characteristic features, the two white throat feathers, the lacy white collar and the amazing metallic black colouring.

    Photographed in the Catlins at Pounawea, this photo was one of many taken at a sugar water feeder. The tuis spent more time fending each other off than feeding!

Tui (prosthemadera novaeseelandiae)

Size: 30cm, 120/90g (male/female)

Description: Medium-large dark bird with two fluffy white feathers on throat. Black in dull light but brilliant metallic green, purple and bronze in direct sunlight. Delicate lacy collar of white thread-like feathers. Bill black and curved downward, legs black and strong. Sexes alike, juveniles lack metallic sheen, collar and throat tuft. Aerobatic in flight making a whirring noise. Song consisting of many melodic notes mixed with clicks, coughs and wheezes.

Habitat: Native bush, gardens parks, land with flaxes, gums and especially Kowhai threes.

Status: Protected endemic. Well adapted to humans.

Breeding: Sep-Feb. Nest built by female. 2-4 eggs laid. Female incubates, both sexes feed young.

Distinguishing Features: Metallic black colouring, white throat feathers, song mixed with coughs and wheezes.
